Marco Polo established Portugal’s first trading port in Macau in 1557, 286 years after he embarked upon his first voyage in 1271. The Portuguese were followed by the Dutch and then the British, supported by their trading houses, the East India Company. It was during this period of globalisation and trade that modern day Hong Kong, Singapore, Penang, Malacca and more were created.
The term Comprador was first coined by the Portuguese meaning ‘a buyer’ in the literal sense. A Comprador was a trusted and respected member of the merchant class who assisted traders in all number of tasks. Hired by contract, the Comprador was responsible for the exchange of goods between buyers and sellers, arranging interpreters, making introductions with local officials, procuring ship supplies and anything else required of him. They were, effectively, modern day ‘Fixers’.
Today, the patterns of trade between East and West still remain but they are different; larger, diversified, more frequent, faster and far more complex.
Today Comprador is a company working on behalf of individuals, families and companies from West to East and East to West, providing bespoke and personalised services to its clients. At all times demonstrating its key values of trust, integrity and loyalty.
